Regular tree trimming is one of the cheapest things you can do to protect your home from storm damage and keep your trees healthy for decades. Limbs over rooflines come down in summer thunderstorms. Branches against siding wear out paint and create entry points for pests. Overgrown canopies make trees top-heavy and prone to failure in wind.
Dixon Trees LLC handles tree trimming for residential and commercial properties throughout Lexington and the Midlands. Our crews are TCIA accredited, ISA members, and OSHA certified- meaning every trim is done by people trained to industry standards.

What Tree Trimming Actually Does
People use the words “trimming” and “pruning” interchangeably, but they’re not quite the same thing. Trimming is usually about clearance, safety, and appearance- removing branches that have grown into the wrong place, taking weight off limbs that are getting heavy, opening up sight lines. Pruning, which we cover on a separate page, focuses more on long-term tree health and structure.
Most trimming jobs in Lexington fall into a few common categories:
- Clearance trimming- removing limbs growing into the house, garage, driveway, or power lines.
- Crown raising- taking off lower limbs to give pedestrian, vehicle, or mower clearance underneath.
- Weight reduction- shortening long lateral limbs that are putting too much leverage on a weak union.
- Storm prep- taking off the dead and weakly attached branches that are going to fail in the next big storm.
- Aesthetic trimming- shaping ornamental trees or removing branches that are throwing off the natural form.
Why Hire a Professional Instead of DIY
For small limbs within easy reach from the ground, a pole saw and some careful work will do the job. For anything beyond that, hiring a pro is worth the money, and here’s why:
Safety
Tree work injuries are common and ugly. Chainsaw kickback, ladder falls, falling limbs hitting people from above- the ER stories from amateur tree work are bad. Our crews work with full safety gear, rigging systems that control where limbs fall, and the training to do it without getting hurt.
Tree health
Bad trimming damages trees. The wrong cut, in the wrong place, leaves a wound that won’t heal- and that wound becomes an entry point for fungus, insects, and decay. Professional trimmers know where to place each cut so the tree seals it off properly.
Property protection
Large limbs falling unpredictably can take out fences, gutters, siding, vehicles, and landscaping. Rigging- controlling each limb on the way down- is one of the things that separates professional tree work from amateur work.
Insurance and liability
If someone gets hurt on your property doing tree work, you can be liable- especially if they’re uninsured. Hiring a fully insured company with workers’ comp and general liability protects you. Dixon Trees carries the full slate of coverage and will provide proof on request.
When to Schedule Tree Trimming in Lexington
In the Midlands, most hardwoods are best trimmed in late winter- January through early March- while the trees are dormant. Dormant pruning means cleaner cuts, faster healing, less stress on the tree, and easier visibility because the branches are bare. It’s also when our schedule has the most flexibility, which often means better pricing.
Some species have their own rules. Oaks should be trimmed in winter, not spring or summer, because cuts during the growing season can attract beetles that spread oak wilt disease. Flowering trees like dogwoods are best trimmed right after they bloom. Spring-blooming ornamentals follow the same rule. Pines can be trimmed year-round but tend to ooze sap less in cooler weather.
Hazardous limbs and storm damage, of course, get trimmed whenever they’re identified. There’s no point waiting if something is going to fall.
How Often Should You Trim?
Most mature trees in the Midlands benefit from trimming every 3 to 5 years. Faster-growing species- silver maples, Bradford pears, fast pines- may need attention more often. Slower-growing species like white oaks can usually go longer between trims. Young trees benefit from light, more frequent trimming to develop good structure for the long term.
The best way to figure out the right schedule for your trees is to have an arborist look at them. Dixon Trees does free on-site evaluations and we’ll tell you what needs to happen this year and what can wait.
